Though peer counseling and mentoring may sound similar, they are not the same. Peer counseling is emotional support given through active listening during which peers help each other in dealing with processes such as stress or anxiety, and others. However, mentoring tends to be goal-oriented as it involves guidance, advice, and expertise on how to achieve something in a certain area, say academic development or career paths. A mentor may guide a student towards thesis proofreading by giving feedback and setting up a structure, while peer counseling supports the emotional journey of dealing with deadlines or pressure. The two are complementary, but knowing which to seek helps you look for appropriate support at the appropriate time. |
